Partially crippled by a stroke and the aftereffects of the drug Gabriel's doctor gave her, she decides not to reveal herself and continues to a new life under a new name. Four years later, Diana is gone (married, in Rochester) and both Vincent and Jacob are deteriorating. Their nightmares infect one another's sleep; they are consciously keeping apart to spare one another, but the separation only makes the situation worse. By the time Devin arrives, summoned by Father, Jacob and surrogate parent Mouse have disappeared, and Vincent is slipping in and out of delirium. The chains in his chamber are ready for the worst. Aided by Mouse, resourceful, determined Jacob has set out in search of "His Lady," whom he has heard calling to him in dreams. Devin, Jamie, and other members of the tunnel community try to locate the wandering pair.
